Court Reporter Job Description
This is a highly responsible and technical role as an Official Court Reporter for the Honorable Judge Leslie Halligan of the Fourth Judicial District in Missoula, Montana.
Duties include attending court sessions, capturing a verbatim record of proceedings using stenographic equipment and computer-aided transcription software, and providing a real-time feed to the bench.
A high degree of accuracy is required, and transcripts are prepared and distributed according to court rules, state statutes, and policies.
The court reporter exercises independent judgment in all aspects of job performance, with work reviewed and evaluated by the judge or court administrator.
Job Qualifications

- The role requires extended periods of listening, concentration, and operating a keyboard or stenograph machine, with potential lifting and transportation of equipment
- Preference given to graduates of a post-secondary court reporting program approved by NCRA and the Montana Supreme Court
- Relevant experience may substitute for prior stenography program completion, demonstrating excellent typing skills, ability to operate recording systems, and understanding of court procedures

- The court reporter exercises independent judgment in all aspects of job performance, with work reviewed and evaluated by the judge or court administrator
- Capture and preserve a verbatim record of court proceedings using computerized recording equipment or stenographic machines
- Set up and operate equipment, conduct sound checks, and dismantle recording equipment in various locations as directed
- Maintain a complete record of verbal communications, including nonverbal incidents, and provide an intelligible record when necessary
- Remind parties to speak clearly and one at a time to ensure a accurate record
- Locate and read or playback portions of proceedings upon request from the judge or litigants
- Utilize computer equipment and software for transcript preparation
- Transcribe, proofread, certify, and distribute official transcripts
- Archive computerized recordings or stenographic files according to Judicial Branch policy
- Provide coverage for other judges within the assigned district and remain current on court reporting technology
- Communicate with litigants and the public regarding transcript requests
- Provide administrative support as assigned by the judge
- Work is performed primarily in a courtroom, hearing room, conference room, judge’s chambers, office setting, or electronic audio-visual platforms
